Some truths are best kept in the shadows . . .
At nearly eighteen, I’m months away from escaping my aunt’s secrets and lies. Except, I’m harboring a big secret of my own.
A red-eyed man cloaked in shadow has been stalking me at night.
I wanted Rosewood, Maine to be my final destination before college. My chance at normalcy. But strange, unexplainable things are threatening to derail my plans.
The red-eyed man followed me here, and he’s not the only one. Two hot guys transfer to my new high school right after I do. They track my every move, especially the aloof and mysterious Lochlan D’angelo.
As I’m sucked into a dangerous world embroiled in secrets, I start to question everything I’ve ever known. Including who I am.
The prologue of this book immediately strikes my interest. McKenna has just moved into this freaky house in a small town in Maine. It sounds idyllic up against the forest, but presently she sees something odd. Her Aunt Tess is paranoid and has been moving her around every few months. She is almost eighteen and hoping to stay here for long enough to make friends. But who is speaking, and why is he following someone?
Her first day at Rosewood High doesn’t go quite as planned, and she develops some exciting symptoms. A fever and hearing noises plus the claws. Plus, she keeps seeing mysterious red eyes. I’m definitely intrigued she seems like an ordinary teenage girl.
Kenna has her hands full between the weekend animal attack after her weird encounter with the jock at the party and the school’s bad boys watching her play. Reid is trying to talk to her. She seems to be attracting all types of attention. Even her nightmares are creepy and definitely hint at something amiss. She is a child without parents. Something happened to her parents at a young age.
Hmm, I’m wondering how many paranormals are in this book and what is Reid? Lachlan seems even weirder so far. McKenna might just be a disaster magnet. Her falling ill every time she touches Reid, Lochlan or Kade is strange. But I think she is beginning to think of what Lochlan may be. The boys are very cryptic in their discussions, and this is very difficult to figure out. How is she not compatible with their type but could save them or ruin them?
So we finally get our first true reveal that Lochlan and Kade are vampires. They seem to be watching over and protecting Kenna. The book then unlocks a riddle that gets creepy. Oh, now a werewolf reveal. But why did it affect Kenna?
This book gets steamy, but we get some answers; however, they don’t seem to fight their attraction to each other very much. Of course, we get more answers, and then this book gets heartbreaking. I have to say she is handling it very well for all the truth revealed, and I’m completely intrigued by this new adult paranormal vampire romance. No, she isn’t a vampire, in case you were wondering. Oh, interesting, somehow the heartbreak is affecting them both, and their friends stage an intervention. But they can’t have contact, so how does this work?
Wow, this book couldn’t have ended with more action that was truly insane and heartbreaking, even making me cry. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. So many answers and yet so much more to be intrigued by. This book does end on a massive cliffhanger.
This story is fascinating; even though it starts out as a paranormal young adult read, it does develop into more or a paranormal new adult read with the addition of some steamy interactions. All the characters are exciting, from Kenna to Lochlan and even Reid, and it did take me forever to figure what they were. I love the high school interactions and the love triangle that was there for part of the story. The angsty broody vampire and his more friendly sidekick were terrific characters.
I truly loved McKenna’s character, not knowing anything about the paranormal world only to put the prices together and, of course, lose her heart to the one person she couldn’t have nothing like forbidden love to make the story super appealing. I loved that she, in fact, turned out to be a rare paranormal, but I won’t reveal what as you need to read this for yourself. This book was entertaining from the beginning getting better as the story progressed.
