It’s been over three months since my friends and I took down Cyrus. Three months where my biggest fear was what paper was due next… But I should have known it was too good to last. Now everything is falling apart.
The Vampire Court has no king, the Dragon Court has no heart, and the Gargoyle Court has me—a teenager in way over her head. And it’s the worst possible timing, because a threat is brewing just as the Circle collapses.
I have no choice but to return to the Shadow Realm and face the terrifying queen who nearly ended us…and make a deal with her to save Mekhi. But this time, I’m bringing my powerful friends with me—and Hudson. Except something is wrong with him, too. He’s keeping a secret—even from me.
All I know is that everyone’s life hangs in the balance. And it’s my fault—because I still owe the Crone a favor…and now she’s come to collect.
My Review
I love the chapter titles at the beginning of the book. I’m not gonna lie; I feel like I need a refresh starting this book like a prologue or something to help me remember how the last book ended. But when I finally got into the story, I remembered why I loved it all over again. Grace and Hudson are fantastic characters, and this paranormal series has come a long way; this story is no exception. It is an action, adventure-filled YA book with the perfect amount of paranormal. I’m sad to see this journey that started at Katmere Academy end, but I can’t help looking back and seeing how far they have come. This series will definitely be on my read-it-again list.
The author does provide some context clues for us to jump back into this world. Hudson and Grace in San Diego that’s a far distance from Katmere Academy. Their conversation brings back memories of their time and the characters in the shadow realm. So we get a bit of catch-up as Hudson, Grace, Flynn, Jaxson, Eden, and Heather meet up. Aww, the paranormal gang is back, minus a few, and has yet another mission to save friends and loved ones.
Like the other books, this one quickly goes beyond paranormal into fantasy with some astonishing supernatural talents and people. Grace has undoubtedly come into her own throughout the adventures in the books, which is very apparent in this one. I love traveling from one place to another and the story effortlessly flowing around the new scenery.
The author gets a little steamy moving this young adult series into new adult territory.
Another quest that seems impossible, but this time, we have the whole team of paranormals, and now the previous book with Hudson and Grace makes so much more sense. I love that the hero and heroine are relatable. They aren’t perfect, and the author shows their struggles. Grace’s anxiety is well described. Hudson also seems to have his own reaction to things beyond his control. Adventure, action, and sass make this book fun to read as the team of paranormals navigates one obstacle at a time.
The author does keep the steamy intimate scenes more upper Ya in this story, but nothing is well described; nonetheless more understood as mature content. I enjoyed the intimacy between fated mates and how she kept it vague, but the bond is shown. The plot points with the gods and goddesses in this book are interesting, but it doesn’t need to be there. The story was fascinating without the extra supernatural inclusions.
The adventures continue in this story, and although it is slow starting, it definitely makes up for toward the end. Everyone goes all out on everything making the scenes very action-packed, from the shadow realm all over the world to a supernatural prison and then back again; this cast and crew of paranormal heroes and heroine fight and deal with all sorts of challenges.
At the end of the book, the author gets very passionate with advice having Grace refocus her mind and wants on the ultimate inspirations. This advice can be applied to our lives, but it is also prophetic in the story.
Not quite the ending I was expecting, but I love our heroine changing the paranormal and shadow world. Of course, it can’t just end. There has to be one last exciting, action-packed moment. I enjoy the author’s humor thru her characters, even in the series of adult moments in the story. Grace and Hudson have certainly come a long way in this series, which I want to read again. The author also includes a little LQBTQ+ seamlessly into this book while still keeping it YA. Grace will always be a heroine to me. I have connected with this character on this profound paranormal journey as she goes from broken to a Queen and Demi-God. “And just that easily, the knot that’s been inside forever starting to loosen. And I realize that, no matter what happens, we’re going to be okay“. This story and that quote were the perfect ending to this long series. Still, I enjoyed all the characters, adventures, action-filled moments, and more contained in these pages.
