Hot and Badgered (Book 1 of the Honey Badger Chronicles) by Shelly Laurenston

Rating: 5 out of 5.

It’s not every day that a beautiful naked woman falls out of the sky and lands face-first on grizzly shifter Berg Dunn’s hotel balcony. Definitely they don’t usually hop up and demand his best gun. Berg gives the lady a grizzly-sized t-shirt and his cell phone, too, just on style points. And then she’s gone, taking his XXXL heart with her. By the time he figures out she’s a honey badger shifter, it’s too late.

Honey badgers are survivors. Brutal, vicious, ill-tempered survivors. Or maybe Charlie Taylor-MacKilligan is just pissed that her useless father is trying to get them all killed again, and won’t even tell her how. Protecting her little sisters has always been her job, and she’s not about to let some pesky giant grizzly protection specialist with a network of every shifter in Manhattan get in her way. Wait. He’s trying to help? Why would he want to do that? He’s cute enough that she just might let him tag along—that is, if he can keep up …

My Review

After I read book four, I had to go back and read the series. I was so sad to find only the first book was available on Kindle unlimited, but I snapped it up and read it right away.

Oh. My. Goodness. It was even funnier than Breaking Badger. This book follows Charlie, the mysterious badass-non-shifter and Berg the grizzly shifter and one of three triplets (and there’s a discussion that will make you giggle). They are completely adorable and hilarious together. Charlie is feisty and prickly and has a penchant for baking. When Berg takes her and her sisters in and puts them in a house in his neighborhood, every bear in the area is delighted and start putting in orders right away. Whether she fills them or not.

Berg’s sister is awesome. She brooks no crap from anyone and will pick you up and toss you out the door if you annoy her. It’s fantastic. As Berg’s siblings get to know the girls, they become as protective of them as Berg and have their backs in their own ways.

This book has fewer POV characters so it’s easier to keep up with. And I already know most of them from reading the fourth book. I adore how Berg just patiently kept at Charlie and let her realize he was perfect for her. He’s exactly what she needs while keeping her sisters safe, trying to figure out what their father has done that’s put them on the radar again, and helping out some of her crankier family members with a little security assistance.

As with the other book, the romance is a small part of the overall story and it is largely action, adventure, and a dash of gleeful violence. We learn a bit more about all three MacKilligan sisters and see them in action.

Definitely an adult read between the language, steamy content and violence. Highly recommend. Thanks to the massive lead time on my actually writing this review, books two and three just popped up on Kindle Unlimited. This is the moment to read them and I’m getting started now while I’m on vacation!
