Author Q & A with A.N. Verebes

Anita (A.N.) Verebes is a daydreamer, writer, and author of the debut romance novel Handle With Care. As a professional civil marriage celebrant, Anita makes a living telling other people’s love stories and celebrating real romance! Living directly between Queensland’s sunny Gold and Sunshine coasts, Anita spends her days
exploring the Great South East with her husband and their two rambunctious sons. When at home, she’s also a slave to two cats and one very spoilt Great Dane.

Question 1 When did you start writing?

It’s corny, but it feels like forever. I was writing silly short stories when I was little (like 7) and graduated to novel-length fanfiction in high school. Handle With Care is my first published original work, though, so I guess technically I was in my mid-thirties?

Question 2 What comes first, the plot or characters?

It honestly depends on the story. For Handle With Care, it was the vague idea of the plot combined with Everett forming very clearly in my mind. For my upcoming novel, You Can’t Hurry Love, it was definitely the characters first.

Question 3 How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Handle With Care is my first (and currently only) published book, and for that reason, it will always be my favorite. However, I have the second book currently in editing, and the third book half-finished, too.

Question 4 Where do you get your inspiration?

I’m definitely inspired a lot by music. Lyrics in particular really guide me on what my characters are feeling or going through. There’s a reason I’m calling my series the Jukebox Collection, haha.

Question 5 Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

Both Gemma and Everett -for all their differences- have had dramatic childhoods and they connect over those similarities. Family is a huge theme for both of them and underpins a lot of how they interact with each other, and also the other characters.

Question 6 Tell us about the process for coming up with the cover.

It’s a Contemporary Romance with a fair amount of (plot-driven) steam/erotica. I needed something that made that pretty clear. I personally love minimalism and don’t go for busy scenery/backgrounds, and the model that my cover designer chose is actually really close to how I’d pictured Everett in my head. I think my designer nailed the brief!

Question 7 Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers?

You Can’t Hurry Love is the second book in the series. It’s Charlie and Sara’s story and deals with some of the same issues that Gemma and Everett did but in a completely different way.

Question 8 What book is currently on your bedside table?

The Desolations of Devil’s Acre by Ransom Riggs. (When I’m not reading and writing romance, I am ALL about YA fantasy.)

Question 9 What do you like to do when you are not writing?

We’re so fortunate to live in Brisbane, Australia – a subtropical climate with beaches within an hour’s drive in either direction- and my family and I spend a lot of time hitting up the beaches in the summertime. In our cooler months, we explore some of the local rainforests (though I’ll admit it, I’m terrified of snakes) and generally like to be out and about.

Question 10 Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I’ve named every one of my pets after fictional characters!

In my day job, I’m an Accounts Clerk. I write on my lunch break every day. Writing keeps me sane.

Question 11 Choose your favorite

Tea or Coffee

Movie or Book

Coke or Pepsi

Morning Person or Night Owl

Paperback, Ebook, or Audio Book
