First Sin – The Manifest by Ellen Hunter

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Can it be a sin to save a life?

My guardian angel broke the supreme law. He saved my life in a fatal accident and accepted a heavy punishment for his intervention.

For twenty years, I suspect nothing of it until a dark creature attacks me. The angel rushes to my aid again, but I’ve stumbled into an ancient battle that drives the angels to the brink of extinction. Now I, of all people, could be their last hope—or their downfall.

In the midst of angels and monsters, I develop deep feelings for my guardian angel, though a relationship is strictly forbidden. His terrible secret still stands between us, and coming too close to him could cause both the angels and mankind to perish…

Does my destiny make me the savior, or am I just bound to the path of sin?

My Review

We begin this story in a crazy storm and get introduced to an angel. But he is watching a horrific event where a life hangs in the balance. He is her guardian angel, but his powers have restrictions. He commits a complex, unselfish act of caring for his charge Lauren and sparing her the pain and death she is about to be in. He feels it all. This book is graphic beware but wholly different and addicting. The story blurs the lines between the paranormal and fantasy genres with pieces in both types of fiction. There are complex, believable paranormal moments and unrealistic ones as well. I see the forbidden romance start to bud into more than just friendship; it doesn’t really take root, but there is plenty of relationship building. The story in this book is mostly character and environment building.

We time jump from that first nerve-wracking intro to Lauren’s point of view. She is a new adult now and out on her own. This story has a very melancholy feel as she is in a lot of danger, constantly overthinking and feeling, and never gets all the answers. She also seems to have a penchant for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This book really thrust you into the paranormal world right away.

I like it when Lauren becomes more than a damsel in distress; perilous events must happen first, but now I can’t wait to see what happens. In my opinion, this book is far beyond the paranormal and on the verge of fantasy.

I’m not sure where the author is going with this story; you get a taste of romance, but it is forbidden, and a lot of action and adventure. However, by the end of the book, I have a better understanding of Lauren and Nathan, their feelings, and the war they are part of. I like this story’s new views on Angels and Demons and human inclusion. I found the entire premise intriguing, and I can’t wait to read more.

We get to see Lauren in a new light and others we have come to know. This storyline gets hopeful, twisted, and more intense with action and adventure scenes that will have you stunned. The author is still borderline between the paranormal and fantasy genres with her Demons and Angels story. This book has a lot of battles between love and hate, light and dark, forgiveness and vengeance.

The author doesn’t disappoint with genuinely emotional and memorable moments and intense action. I love that we feel what Lauren feels as we read this story. I’m surprised at the turns this has taken early in the story, but I can’t wait to see where it goes.

We get an introspection on grief as Lauren suffers, but the reader feels her pain. I’m not sure I love how the story brings something important back. I think it could have been more dramatic. I was expecting it in battle, but this was surprising.

This story gets intense as decisions are made that affect the future for both Nathan and Lauren. This book does take very unexpected turns. The surprises are so twisted I don’t even know what to think about them. I didn’t see this coming at all, and I’m surprised by the direction this goes. This revelation changes everything. The turns, horror, and suspense keep coming with new revelations and foes to defeat. They have to work hard for their ever after, and it doesn’t come exactly as I thought it would, but it is fitting for this story.
