Question: What do a reclusive author and an outgoing real estate agent have in common?
Answer: Nothing.
But fate brought them together on a vacation five years ago, and as Logan and Sloane prepare for their annual get-together, there are sparks flying between them.
Sloane:
When Logan Murphy, my accidental best friend, calls to say our annual mid-winter trip has to be “redone,” he’s already got the solution.
Belize. An adults-only resort, and we leave in two days.
I’m giddy with excitement, because I need this trip more than I can express. When I see Murph standing in the airport, my heart twitches to a beat it hasn’t since my fiancé left me to tell our friends and family that he couldn’t make it to the wedding.
So it’s a short-lived twitch, because I’m never going to get into the dating boxing ring again—and least of all with my best friend.
Logan:
I’ve never told Sloane what I do for a living, and she doesn’t know how I feel about her either. But I want her to know all of my secrets.
I want my best friend in my life more than once a year, and I’ve already started penning a happily-ever-after for the two of us.
This year, I tell myself, as my crush on the vibrant woman is at least two years old now.
If only I knew how to tell her…
This is a standalone, slow-burn travel romance that will make you smile, gasp, and cheer for Logan and Sloane as they figure out who they are…and who they want—at home or on vacation.
My Review
Sloane is a successful real estate agent in Pennsylvania. She’s best friends with Murph, better known as Logan Murphy. They talk all the time but only take one vacation together each year. Years after being left at the altar by her ex-fiancé, Sloane has sworn off relationships and happily ever afters. Honestly, I don’t blame her. She already has the things that matter most to her: a successful career, a close relationship with her mom, and an incredible best friend. How Sloane and Logan first met is half the fun of the story, and I loved how chaotic it was from the very beginning.
Logan Murphy is a bit of a conundrum. He’s tall, sweet, funny, and an author. While he’s been quietly hiding his feelings for Sloane, they’ve slowly found their way into his books. Of course, he wants to be more than friends. Throw in a hotel mix-up and this annual vacation might be the trip that changes everything, for better or worse.
I’m sorry, but give me beach vibes, a summer romance, and a hero writing under a pen name, and I’m hooked. As the story unfolds, both Sloane and Logan are battling years of miscommunication and the fear of ruining the friendship they’ve built. The angst and tension between them is as irresistible as the fruity vacation drinks they’re always talking about. I also appreciated how mature they were. They actually communicated instead of letting misunderstandings drag out for the entire trip.
Sloane definitely hesitates. Every day seems to bring a new reason why she shouldn’t risk their friendship, and she certainly doesn’t jump in with both feet. Logan, on the other hand, is patient and steady. He has his own insecurities, but he takes everything in stride and never gives up on her.
They’ve been best friends for years and thought they knew everything about each other, but Sloane’s fears threaten to pull them apart. Logan’s biggest secret, however, may be the very thing that finally changes everything between them.
Although Elana Johnson leans into the classic third-act breakup, the story ends with a heartwarming happily-ever-after that felt well earned.
I adored that this is a clean romance with mature, midlife characters. The romance is limited to kisses, making it perfect for readers looking for a sweet, low-spice love story. It includes some fun tropes like friends to lovers, only one bed, vacation romance, and plenty of summer vibes.
Overall, this was such a fun, heartwarming read. It’s the kind of cozy romance that will leave you dreaming of sandy beaches, delicious food, and colorful swimsuits. Logan is the ultimate golden retriever book boyfriend, attentive, patient, and just mysterious enough to keep you wanting more. The writing flowed beautifully, and I was invested from beginning to end.
I also love that I picked up the special edition, complete with gorgeous bonus pages. After finishing this one, I can’t wait to add even more of Elana Johnson’s books to my TBR. 💕📚
