A warrior princess trained in isolation, Lara is driven by two certainties. The first is that King Aren of the Bridge Kingdom is her enemy. And the second is that she’ll be the one to bring him to his knees.
The only route through a storm-ravaged world, the Bridge Kingdom of Ithicana enriches itself and deprives its rivals, including Lara’s homeland. So when she’s sent there as a bride under the guise of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture its impenetrable defenses—and the defenses of its king.
Yet as she infiltrates her new home and gains a deeper understanding of the war to possess the bridge, Lara begins to question whether she’s the hero or the villain. As her feelings for her husband transform from frosty hostility to fierce passion, Lara must choose which kingdom she’ll save . . . and which she’ll destroy.
My Review
Lara stands at the edge of the desert, knowing it is impassable without the right supplies and knowledge. She lives in a secluded compound with her eleven sisters. Water is precious in this harsh, arid land. Her father, the King of Maridrina, has raised his daughters with a singular purpose. Lara’s future is dangerous and uncertain as her father plots to place one of his daughters on the throne of Ithicana, a rival kingdom known as the Bridge Kingdom.
While her sisters dream of freedom, Lara wants something more. She wants to truly live. She has a backbone, plenty of sass, and has been trained to become far more than a wife to a rival king.
The first chapter is dark, twisted, and completely addictive. This story has a macabre atmosphere filled with political intrigue, manipulation, and power struggles. Lara is trapped between an arranged marriage, her desire for freedom, and the mission her father has given her. She is clever, resourceful, and far more devious than anyone expects.
When Lara arrives in Valcotta, the capital of Ithicana, she must travel through her homeland for the first time in years. Her father gives her one year to carry out her mission, with her freedom hanging in the balance. Her first impressions of Aren are unsettling. Is he a monster, a fool, or simply a man trying to protect his kingdom? No matter what she discovers, her mission remains clear and she must maintain her composure.
Aren is witty, intelligent, and surprisingly kind. He wants to keep Ithicana safe but not at the expense of the people he loves. He understands Lara’s pain more than she expects. Watching their relationship slowly evolve is fascinating. They begin as enemies, and the fact that Lara is secretly a spy complicates everything. Every new revelation about Aren and Lara left me wondering what would happen next.
The jungle landscapes, crashing waves, and island setting give this story strong summer vibes. I loved the contrast between the harsh desert of Maridrina and the lush tropical beauty of Ithicana. The banter, slow-building trust, and occasional betrayals kept me completely invested. This book hooked me with its simmering romance, political intrigue, and constant treachery.
I loved both Aren and Lara. They want many of the same things, yet they constantly find themselves at odds. This story works wonderfully as an audiobook because it feels like a fantasy spy thriller wrapped in romance. Lara struggles with duty, loyalty, and her own growing understanding of the truth. The longer she spends in Ithicana, the more she realizes that everything she believed may have been a lie.
One small criticism is that Tarin’s narration felt softer than I imagined. I expected a stronger, more commanding voice based on her character. Otherwise, the audiobook experience was fantastic.
They say the truth will set you free, but in this book it will also leave you gasping. As Lara uncovers the truth about Aren, Ithicana, and the atrocities committed by her father, everything she thought she knew begins to unravel.
The lies, deceit, and betrayals make this book absolutely addictive. There are just enough secrets to keep you turning the pages. The lighter and more humorous moments make the characters even more lovable. The enemies-to-lovers romance feels genuine as trust slowly develops between them. Beneath the guilt, deception, and political maneuvering, there are beautiful moments where their love truly shines.
The story is filled with peril, devastating decisions, and consequences that echo throughout the kingdom. I became completely invested in the fate of these characters. The audiobook was wonderful, but I found myself wanting the physical books as well. Fantasy does not always pull me in this deeply, but this one completely captured my attention. The dual POV storytelling adds so much depth, and as Lara begins making impossible choices while Aren fights for both his kingdom and the woman he loves, I found myself on the edge of my seat.
The romance eventually becomes steamy as they share their deepest secrets and vulnerabilities. Lara finally reaches a decision about where she belongs. I especially loved the adventure of the jungle island setting. The storms, wildlife, and tropical atmosphere made this feel like the perfect summer fantasy read.
The ending was incredible. So much happens, and it is far from a neat and happy conclusion. The entire final section left me repeatedly saying, “What?” and “Oh my gosh!” with every twist and revelation. I immediately wanted to pick up the next book.
The island kingdom completely stole my heart, along with its royal family and their complicated relationships. This book is epic. The combination of political intrigue, romance, betrayal, jungle landscapes, storms, and island life created an unforgettable story. It is the perfect fantasy to read during the summer, and I cannot wait to continue the series.
I’m wondering why I waited so long to start this book cause omg it has me in a chokehold now.
