(The 142nd Phantom Lancers Book 3)

SHE’S BEING HUNTED. HE’S HER ONLY DEFENSE.

I was there the day Ivy’s life went from normal to hell on earth. I watched them stitch up every external wound…and watched her pretend it was enough. Then she was gone.

Not from me—she was never mine. She was his. And I had to watch that, too.

I strapped into my Raptor and flew into the night to avenge what they did to her. And I had to do it beside him, because he always got to be the hero. Then the op went sideways. Now that same hell is coming back for her. And this time, I’m the one standing between her and the darkness closing in. The problem? Even though she isn’t his anymore, she still is. He still calls her his wife. And she still looks at him like he hung the damn moon.

I don’t know who’s after me—but I know why. No one wants their victim escaping. No one wants the United States military hunting them down. And somehow, I’m at the center of the chaos. Me…and my three-year-old daughter.

Kyler failed me. Or maybe we failed each other. And even if my heart hasn’t accepted it, he isn’t mine anymore.

Which leaves Dalton. My friend. My protector. And now…my roommate.

He looks at me like he sees past the wreckage and straight to the woman I used to be. I’m shattered—but for the first time in years, someone might know how to put me back together.

Ghost is Book Two in The Silent Pursuit series – part of the 142nd Phantom Lancers – and continues directly after Viking. While each book can be read as a stand-alone, the four-book series is best enjoyed in order: VikingGhost, BishopSaint.

My Review

“When Grace Defies Gravity”

Dalton’s dream has always been to fly. Ever since he was a kid, he wanted to be a pilot of a Raptor. Raised by a military father, his roots run deep.

Kyler is military as well, and he meets Ivy for the first time in an unassuming way, but the sparks and tension begin immediately. He is the morally gray, dangerous one who steals your heart. We do jump perspectives quite a bit as this story gets started, but I remember a little of Ivy from the first book, Viking.

Ivy has a history and plenty of skeletons in her closet. We are given very few clues about the details, but it seems she and Dalton share a past. Of course, that immediately intrigued my spidey senses.

Circumstances quickly bring Ivy and Dalton back into each other’s orbit, creating plenty of tension and unanswered questions. Things get juicy fast, and I wanted all the dirty laundry. Ivy has a backbone, thank goodness, even if she is scared out of her mind.

I adore the rivalry and camaraderie between the Air Force and Army personnel. Their teasing and humor make this story feel like home. The forced proximity is wonderful as Dalton is both protective and caring. Ivy’s damage is not just from Kyler, but I really cannot wait to learn about all the skeletons in her closet. Despite being damaged and slow to trust, she is a loving mom to Hadley and always puts her daughter’s health and safety first.

The author brings in PTSD and mental health issues such as anxiety, panic attacks, and other struggles that feel very relevant to both this story and the lives of military personnel and their families.

“I’ve never seen anyone look that broken and that strong at the same time. And I don’t think I’ll ever forget her.”- Dalton

This story has a complicated love triangle with damage, time, and memories hanging between them all. I’m enjoying the heck out of it, mostly because Ivy is the type of woman who shines even when she is broken.

Dalton is the fierce, steady safety needed to heal the broken. Kyler is more like a sledgehammer, but somehow effective. This story is as much about the present as it is about the past, and I appreciated the way the author led us through the memories, feelings, and emotions. I was hopeful for the romance and healing, but also for those quiet moments where you might just catch the rainbow shining through.

I adore how Brilee Scott captures the simple moments that feel cozy and special while also portraying the reality of being a military spouse. The strong and broken parts, the grace and fear, the warmth and rawness of it all. It is beautiful in its own way and incredibly relatable.

Yeah, I saw that coming. There was no way they were going to stay in forced proximity for that long without things becoming complicated. Love triangles are not my favorite trope, but I appreciate that this one makes sense.

The tarmac heats up, and so does the danger for both Dalton and Ivy.

The emotional payoff of this story reminded me that family is not always blood, but choice, and that love often happens when you least expect it. Ivy’s story is a hard hitter, but I think I actually cried more through Chance. However, that does not make me want to stop reading these books. I love the way the author writes, pulling at the heartstrings while representing military life from the perspective of the women, not just the men who serve and protect.

I adored Hadley. She definitely brought sunshine to the story. I enjoyed watching the relationships develop throughout the story and seeing the characters grow together. Kyler and Dalton accepting the complicated situation while wanting what was best made it much easier for the story to progress.

There were so many moments where, as a veteran’s wife, I found myself thinking, “Yeah, she gets it.” The way Brilee Scott described things and related them felt very true to life.

This book is soul-touching, and even with all the damage and heartbreak, I think it will resonate with many young women who find themselves falling in love with a soldier.

I also adored the found family that includes previous characters like Lila and Viking, Allina and Wells, and even Townsend.

I’m excited to see where the series goes next.

The glossary in the back is a nice touch for readers who are unfamiliar with military terminology. Maybe I read too many military romances because I totally did not need it.

I had the privilege of reading this book as an arc and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily.
