Winter’s Blade by Harper Lynn

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Rule #1 of surviving in a Fae-ruled world: Don’t get noticed.
Rule #2: When you inevitably break Rule #1, deny everythin
g.

Twenty-six-year-old Elise Tolleson was doing just fine being completely unremarkable. No special abilities, not a single extraordinary trait, just a human trying to survive in a world where the Fae treat mortals like particularly amusing pets. But life missed the memo about her planned mediocrity.

Now she’s caught the attention of Kylas, the Winter’s Blade, the Fae Queen’s most lethal assassin and definitely not someone you want discovering your secrets. He’s supposed to eliminate her as some prophesied threat, but instead seems fascinated by her spectacular talent for turning life-threatening situations into even bigger disasters.

Being the first human in centuries to make a Fae’s cold heart skip a beat should be flattering. Instead, it’s made Elise a pawn in a deadly game of court politics where the stakes are her freedom and one wrong move means game over.

His touch might be ice and his kiss might be venom, but his growing obsession with her might just be her survival. That is, if she can navigate Fae politics, survive assassination attempts, and figure out why her ordinary life suddenly came with such extraordinary complications.

Remember, in the world of the Fae, even the most carefully planned mediocrity can become a death sentence. And Winter’s Blade rarely misses his mark… unless properly distracted by the one human who dares to challenge him.

My Review

This book starts out with a prophecy, which is a riddle that is interesting. Kylas is a fae assassin tasked with unaliving those the Queen decided on. He is commonly known as Winters Blade. He seems to be the queen’s mercenary tasked with yet another mission. However, his missions are starting to affect his cold heart.

Elise is a human working in a restaurant that serves the fae. But she is clumsy and not well-suited for the job. However, she is intriguing even to the Winters Blade. I enjoyed the banter even with the self-deprecation.

Kyla does things out of character concerning Elise. So if he can’t unalive her back to life despite trying, he decides to make her his personal servant. Also, this book takes place in an unknown realm. I can’t tell if it is fae, human, or other.

This story is an intriguing part of the start of a series. I’m undecided if I want to read more. I do love the clumsy heroine and the world this author has painted in her story. But I’m not sure if I’ll like future stories even if I wanted to read more, the next book in the series, Winter’s Kiss isn’t out yet. It is available now.
