The Highland Escape by Emily Silver

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The first time I met my neighbor, I was covered in toilet water. The second time? I was staring up his kilt. On accident, of course.

Just when life was looking up, things went from bad to worse. Promotion? Forget it. I’m lucky I’m not arrested. But when fate tossed me the keys to an old Scottish Inn—courtesy of a grandmother I never met—I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

What have I got to lose? Everything, apparently.

With no clue how to run an inn, let alone fix it up, I turned to the one person that doesn’t want to help me. A neighbor with an ax to grind.

It doesn’t matter how sexy he is—I wasn’t going to fall for his charms. That is, until he came to my rescue in a moment of need.

There were worse places to wait out my fate than in the arms of the one person I didn’t know I needed, but found myself falling for no matter what I did.

When the real world comes calling, I have a choice to make—go back to the comforts of my old life or dive headfirst into the chaos of the highlands
.

With a hairy coo named Angus and a rooster that loves cooking shows, get ready to fall head over kilt for The Highland Escape.

My Review

This story will take you on a trip from workaholics to do-it-yourself home repair. But while doing it all, Callum and Kirby find love in the small Scottish town, themselves, and each other. The story is sizzling hot and filled with great banter. Even being a rugged, grumpy Scottish man, Callum is such a cinnamon roll, and I love the midlife romance. Kirby is finding a new pace of life and a new partner to enjoy it with, and the ending is sweet.

I appreciate the English translation at the beginning of the book for the Scottish dialect.

Kirby is a hardworking lady who is on the rise for a promotion till it all hits the fan at work, and then, of course, she inherits a house in Scotland.

Callum is back home after his recent divorce, but this small town full of nosy people can’t resist putting him to work and setting him up.

Her first meeting with Callum is comical, and she is definitely a spicy redhead. Oh, the banter and stubborn attitude is fabulous. They also have some tension between them, like enemies to lovers. Wow, these two can’t stand working together for a couple of weeks. The home repair really does make or break it. Their chemistry is sizzling, and so are the intimate scenes.

Totally cliche for a romance, but I like the sweet, grumpy man changing his mind from wanting her to leave and be left alone to trying to figure out how to make her stay. Both characters have grown as human beings while repairing this old inn. The sizzling scenes are hot and sweet as they pack all their emotions into them.
