One stupid party. One stupid boy. One stupid kiss. And my life was virtually over.
Tessa McCaide has a unique talent for getting into trouble. Then again, it isn’t easy for a girl with psychic visions to ignore what she sees. Luckily Tessa and her family are leaving California and moving halfway across the country, giving her the perfect opportunity to leave her reputation as “Freaky Tessa” behind.
But Tessa doesn’t realize that kissing the wrong guy in her new Texas town could land her in far more trouble than she ever imagined. Like being forced to attend St. Ailbe’s Academy, a secret boarding school for werewolves.
Even if the wrong guy did accidentally turn her into a shapeshifter and doom her to attending the weirdest high school ever, Tessa can’t help her growing attraction to the mysterious Dastien Laurent.
When vampires attack St. Ailbe’s and her visions pinpoint an enemy in their midst, Tessa realizes that boy drama and her newfound canine tendencies might just be the least of her problems.
My Review
Tessa is seventeen and preparing to move with her family to Texas. Her unique supernatural talent makes her introverted and a bit compulsive about her clean space. Omg, I love Tessa right now. She is totally giving me “Alice Cullen “vibes.
There are a few spots in the story where I have to reread to figure out the sentence the author was trying to say. The new school in Texas for the gifted also hosts other paranormal-like wolf shifters. I love that we experience all of this from the main characters pov. St. Ailbe’s should be quite the adventure for Tessa.
The general storyline of this story is very Twilight-esque, with a new girl in school, her supernatural talents, and her hot, rebellious paranormal wolf shifter. At least Dastien’s character is interesting, and Tessa develops in her new surroundings.
Now that Tessa is at the school of paranormals, it is no fault of her own. This author mixes lore with wolf shifters and werewolf facts being implemented into the story. However, I’m more curious about Tessa’s original gift, which was intriguing. Now that she is paranormal and not just supernatural, I wonder what has happened to her.
Dastien’s protective nature and breaking the rules regarding Tessa are entertaining. I’m waiting for a reasonable explanation to drop. Ah, there it is. I knew it was coming.
The love triangle and teenage angst are strange in a storyline with fated mates and chosen mates. But the high school indecision is there in the storyline. As the storyline picks up, there is more subterfuge in the academy-like setting, and of course, Tessa and Dastien are in the middle of it. It would be nice if the author provided translations for the different languages in the story.
Omg, I love that Tessa turns into a badass heroine at the end of this story. Also, her heritage coming into play is totally interesting. Her hybrid nature must still be fully defined, which is crucial to the storyline.
The young adult paranormal fiction romance is relatable to the generation it is written for, especially with references like “going furry.”
The book ends with her embracing her newfound reality, but stuff is in the air. I am still determining where the next story in the series will take us, but I would love more information on Tessa. This book is the beginning of a long 9 book series. But the storyline is interseting enough to keep you reading. This is one of the few series I have read when I cant wait to read the next book. This series is complete.
