Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover

Rating: 4 out of 5.

After a childhood filled with poverty and neglect, Beyah Grim finally has her hard-earned ticket out of Kentucky with a full ride to Penn State. But two months before she’s finally free to change her life for the better, an unexpected death leaves her homeless and forced to spend the remainder of her summer in Texas with a father she barely knows.

Devastated and anxious for the summer to go by quickly, Beyah has no time or patience for Samson, the wealthy, brooding guy next door. Yet, the connection between them is too intense to ignore. But with their upcoming futures sending them to opposite ends of the country, the two decide to maintain only a casual summer fling. Too bad neither has any idea that a rip current is about to drag both their hearts out to sea.

My Review

Beyah has a hard life. She is just a teenager but is living in poverty with an addicted mother and has had to grow up fast to survive. Her life changes as the inevitable happens.

Samson is an enigma in the story, but he seems to capture her attention, good and evil. As these acquaintances become friends, we see kindred spirits. They seem to be opposites in many things, but they also seem to understand each other in a way only those who struggle with their lives would. This story is quite profound and a new adult fiction.

Well, that explains the name of this book. This story reminds me of a different take on The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, a timeless summer romance story. I am anxious to see how this ends. I didn’t expect that story to go there with Samson, but I’m not surprised it did.

This new adult summer romance ends very sweetly. Still, it is a story about two broken people finding their other pieces in each other. Beyah and Samson are both significantly damaged but find solace and love in each other, and they start to live again before life catches up to them. The ending is sweet and brings us back to the simple moments in their romance. I found this story inspirational despite the tragedy that is both the main characters’ lives. However, the book was a good read, and the story was dramatic. I’ll probably read more by this author soon.
