Falling in love with a paranormal creature isn’t a good idea for 18-year-old Claire. Having just adjusted to a new High School after her parents’ death, she can’t afford to be sidetracked by complications of any kind—no matter how intriguing. But fate has different plans for her…

My Review

Spoiler Alert in the review

Claire is an out-of-sort high school teenager with her little group of misfit friends. She is a damaged MC with a past she would instead not share. She is an ambivert, wanting alone time but loving her friends in small doses. She is a girl after my book-loving heart. She has an exciting meeting with Adam, a new stranger who has captured her interest at the city cemetery. The beginning of this story truly highlights the teenage awkwardness and drama. This is abnormally painful to read, so slow and tedious.

So his gifts are finally being shown, and all admit they are strange, like a reader. Still, instead of thoughts, he reads emotions almost like an empath but on a little more profound level. This book is extraordinary in that the male is the paranormal. Still, he doesn’t know the extent of his supernatural abilities, and she is very accepting but comes to terms with it all soon and is very human.

The author tries to get a connection so you will feel with the characters but fails instead; it is just happier than more drama. The author finally brings in an outside force to deal with, but even that encounter is lackluster. This story is prolonged and challenging to stay focused on.

Danger, heartbreak, and the brink of supernatural torture, I’m finally starting to hope this will go somewhere. I do like the strong heroine who continues on despite her pain.

The author touches on many tropes we see in best-selling books like Twilight and is advertised as like Twilight. This is not like Twilight at all, but I see some similarities in the tropes. I love the paranormal, supernatural abilities, friends to lovers, human mates, fated mates, and angels and demons in this story. I want to see where this goes, and I’m hoping I’ll enjoy the second half of this book more than I did the first.

Almost to the end of the book now, and I finally got an emotional response to the tragedy in the book. I don’t know what the author thought about killing off a main character; that sure was a curve ball. But now that we dwell in the depth of grief, we finally connect emotionally to the story through Claire’s perspective. I must admit the last few pages of this book wrecked me like we’re taking ugly crying. That was a very curious ending in the epilogue, and I guess I have to read more to find out what happens next.

I will admit this story is Twilight-esque. It has similar tropes and storylines, although definitely less captivating from the start.

That super slow introduction was difficult, but the book picks up halfway through and then gets twisted. The author did finally manage to cause an emotional reaction and some surprise. This paranormal romance is an okay read with good tropes and characters you want to connect with. However, I didn’t feel a connection till the last few pages of the book. But it ends with me asking what now? So I guess I’ll read the next book and find out.

The brother’s infatuation is strange, with her still mourning Adam. It is almost creepy. I hope the author doesn’t go down that path in this book. Apparently, the author is going down that path, and I don’t love it at all. It introduces a love triangle but gives me a guilty conscience for Claire.

Trigger warning for torture
