A high-stakes romantasy where The Hunger Games meets Norse mythology, packed with deadly trials, dangerous intrigue, and a slow-burn romance where your greatest enemy may be your only ally.
Nine realms. One bond. No escape.
For ten thousand years, a Keeper has stood between Earth and the chaos of the Norse realms, holding back cunning gods, legendary creatures, and beautifully wicked fae. But Saga knows nothing of this until her dying father calls her home to Iceland and leaves her his title, his secrets, and a fate she can’t refuse.
She discovers she’s bound by magic to Kalen, a mysterious fae who despises her fragile humanity because when she dies, so does he. So when the Norse gods resurrect the Tournament of Realms, a brutal contest where champions fight for the role of Keeper, Saga must obey the call, and Kalen becomes wholly infested.
To survive the trials, Saga must master her fighting skills and tether with her companion beast while navigating the intrigue of the gods. Yet her greatest challenge may be resisting Kalen, who could either save her heart or shatter the world she’s fighting for because desire is as lethal as the gods’ games.
My Review
Norse mythology, Iceland, gods and goddesses, deadly trials, and a story full of high stakes and tension… this one immediately pulled me in.
We begin in Iceland with Saga, returning home, but that sense of comfort doesn’t last long. Her quiet life is quickly disrupted by dangerous and unpredictable men, including Kalen with his cryptic behavior and Gunnar with his more aggressive presence. From that moment on, Saga is completely out of her depth. What starts on a rustic farm quickly expands into icy landscapes, shifting alliances, and far more questions than answers. Just when it feels grounded in clan dynamics, the story takes a turn and pulls in the gods themselves.
The world building is layered with allies, enemies, gods, and creatures that elevate the stakes. Saga is very much an underdog, and I found myself rooting for her even when I didn’t fully understand what was happening. This is a dense fantasy with familiar elements that remind me of stories like Thor, The Hunger Games, and How to Train Your Dragon, while still carving out its own path.
The deadly trials, shifting friendships, and constant tension kept me engaged. There are moments where the story slows and gives you space to breathe, only to pull you right back into chaos. The reveal surrounding Kalen added another layer of intrigue and made everything feel even more complex. Saga is not only fighting for survival but also navigating her connection to him, which brings both tension and emotion into the story.
There are terms and words that are not immediately translated, which can make the reading experience feel more immersive but also requires patience. This is not a fast or easy fantasy. It is intricate and layered, and it takes time to process everything happening.
The romance adds another dimension with star crossed elements, forbidden tension, and a morally grey male character. It leans into a more poetic style at times, which gives it a classic, almost Shakespearean feel, but that same style can occasionally slow the pacing.
The ending builds into something bigger, expanding beyond the trials and hinting at what’s to come next. I really appreciated the glossary at the back, which helps ground the world and its mythology.
Overall, this was a complex and imaginative fantasy. I loved the creativity, the characters, and the ambition of the story. That said, it did take me time to fully get into it, and the density made it harder to stay immersed at times. This isn’t a binge read. It’s a story you need to sit with and take in piece by piece.
A solid four star read for me. I’m definitely interested in continuing the series and seeing where Saga’s journey goes next.
