To save a kingdom, Brynn may have to surrender her soul.
Brynn’s hard won victory in the Arcane Trials came with a price she never expected. Now, as Kaelric fights to reclaim his shattered kingdom, she must choose between answering the dangerous call of her heart, or protecting the family she’s always sworn to keep safe.
But the deeper she steps into his world, the more she realizes that some bonds demand more than she ever imagined giving.
My Review
This book picks up three months after the Arcane Trials. Valkaryn is still hidden away, now living in Hildreth, trying to adjust to a quieter, more peaceful life but she’s struggling to truly enjoy it. Her siblings and Kaelric’s family are still very much present, and we get updates on so many familiar faces from previous books, which I loved.
Illa continues to be her main source of information, and the author does such a great job painting vivid imagery of Hildreth, it feels immersive and alive. Meanwhile, Brynn is caught off guard by a summons from Kaelric through his beta, Godric, calling her to the capital. And yes, that fated mates connection? Still very much there.
Valkaryn’s story is honestly addictive. This dystopian world keeps expanding with journeys, war, and rising stakes. We also get more of Kaelric’s story, his ascension to the throne, the tension between him and Brynn, their arguments… and that apology? So swoony, my goodness.
As the story progresses, Brynn, Godric, and Valkaryn head toward Lunari on what becomes a rescue mission to find Maelis, Illa’s mother. The inner dialogue is one of my favorite parts, it’s sharp, emotional, and sometimes even a little funny. At the same time, Brynn is struggling with her human side, almost pushing it away in order to become what she needs to be to save others. Her determination really stands out here.
Brynn, especially, shines in this book. We see a different side of her, and I loved the contrast between her human and shifter nature. As a shifter, she’s tactical, brave, and fully stepping into her role as a heroine. This is truly where she comes into her own.
This story may end on a somewhat happy note for now but there’s still so much left to come, especially for Brynn. The romance builds in a way that feels earned after everything they’ve been through. Kaelric and Brynn’s journey is long, emotional, and at times painful, but it’s absolutely one worth reading and rereading.
By the end, everything comes full circle. Brynn has grown into exactly the kind of strong, brave heroine you root for, even shaping the world around her in the process. And Brynn and Kaelric? A true power couple. Their journey is epic, emotional, and unforgettable.
