One viral moment. That’s all it took to destroy everything Kane Mitchell had fought for.
Kane Mitchell was the reigning MMA champion. His was the name every opponent feared. And everything he had built and fought for was gone overnight, replaced by a scandal that no amount of wins could fix.
Now his team has a plan. A fake girlfriend. A PR miracle. The only problem… he doesn’t want to be saved. Daphne Wilson has her dream job on the line and the determination to make the impossible possible. She can manage the cameras, the reporters, and the carefully crafted public image. What she isn’t prepared for is the man behind the armor — one who doesn’t know how to trust, and has never believed anyone would choose to stay.
He had stepped into the arrangement to save his career. But Daphne broke through his defenses more deftly than any blow he had taken from an opponent.
The man who once fought only to win for himself was now fighting to protect her, making him even more dangerous in the cage.
Because this fight was for her heart.
My Review
Kane is an MMA fighter at the top of his career, but instead of feeling accomplished, he is bored and almost suffering from burnout. Nothing seems to challenge him anymore. Even fighting in the ring feels too easy, and he no longer feels the thrill or drive that once pushed him forward.
His manager comes up with an idea that is just crazy enough to potentially reshape Kane’s image. Of course, Kane initially refuses. He values his integrity too much to play along with something that feels fake. The story is set in Philadelphia, PA, which adds a great backdrop to the gritty MMA atmosphere.
Daphne is the complete opposite of Kane. She’s idealistic and believes in the good in people. Fresh out of college and pursuing a career in sports public relations, she receives an offer she simply can’t refuse, and it sets the stage for the fake relationship between her and Kane.
Their forced proximity feels more like an armed truce at first. There’s tension everywhere between them. Daphne’s sunshine personality is almost saint-like compared to Kane’s grumpy, bad-boy attitude. Their interactions are filled with chemistry, but their time alone together feels like crossing a massive river. Slowly, step by step, Daphne begins to see who Kane really is and what drives him.
There is also a subtle forbidden element to their relationship. It isn’t strictly workplace romance, but it carries that feeling at times for the reader. What I really enjoyed was watching Kane evolve throughout the story. He starts as a fighter weighed down by his own demons but gradually grows into a more mature version of himself. I appreciated that the author kept the focus on his career, personal growth, and emotional development.
The ending wrapped up beautifully and honestly surprised me. I expected more dramatic conflict near the end, but the resolution felt satisfying without dragging things out unnecessarily.
If you enjoyed movies like Never Back Down or Fight Club, you may really enjoy this MMA-centered sports romance. It starts with a new adult main character who is mostly focused on himself, but watching Kane grow, mature, and make meaningful changes was one of my favorite parts of the story. It almost feels like watching the kind of character from those films grow into who they might eventually become.
Overall, this was a well-written story with strong character development and a compelling sports romance element.
