My darling Texan by Dakota Lacoy

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Fiesty. Fun. Sparkling.

By night this rough-and-tough cowboy was a bestselling romance author …

If anyone ever found out, life as he knew it would be over, for he and his brothers were legendary in Honky Tonk, Texas–known for being six-foot-gorgeous quintessential cowboys who’d migrated from ranching to small town living.

When a lost, wet, bedraggled flight attendant showed up stranded at A.J.’s remote cabin, he didn’t think twice about sheltering her throughout a storm.

And she didn’t think twice about rummaging through his things. What she hadn’t counted on was his reaction to what she discovered.

Cowboys who have swapped out ranching for small-town living star in this seven-book, stand-alone series. And they’ve not left the ranch for just any small town, but one with a colorful background and storefronts such as Pump & Grind Coffee Shop, Get the Hair Outta Here, Junk & Disorderly, and The Family Jewels.

This short, fun first-in-series romance is an, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity romantic comedy and the perfect antidote after a long day at work.

My Review

A.J. is an author and audiobook narrator living in a remote cabin in Honky Tonk, Texas on the edge of his parents’ ranch. He prefers solitude so he can focus on writing. Then Carley literally stumbles in lost, wet, and cold, and of course he lets her stay.

Carley has a huge imagination. She’s sunny but also a bit of a hot mess. She loves romance books and crime shows, so her running commentary on every situation, especially anything involving a man with a deep voice, is hilarious. You can’t help but laugh at how her mind jumps to conclusions.

The cabin itself is fun too. From the outside it looks like a rustic shack, but inside it has surprisingly impressive details that make it feel more like a billionaire hermit house. We get a lot of descriptions of the space and it adds to the atmosphere.

This audiobook has a single male narrator and it actually works really well. Carley’s internal monologue is entertaining, especially when she finds his stash of Jade Arnett books and lets her imagination spiral again.

A.J. has a softer side beneath the gruff exterior and the forced proximity from the storm keeps them stuck together long enough for awkward conversations and tension to build. The coincidences keep stacking until the truth about the Texan hermit finally comes out. The reveal is fun and honestly meeting your favorite author and narrator would mess with anyone’s head.

The storm clears at the worst possible moment and then the family shows up, bringing secrets out into the open. I loved his gruff cinnamon roll behavior toward Carley. The timeline moves quickly near the end and a lot is implied rather than shown, but it stays sweet overall. He really goes all out to win her over and the family involvement makes the ending warmer.

Overall this was a fun audio listen with humor, imagination, and a sweet romance.
