He Falls First by Jill Shalvis

Rating: 4 out of 5.

No one is going to convince her to fall in love again…

Ryder Colburn has his hands full running the family business and caring for the ailing father who’s a virtual stranger from the cold, heavy-handed man he used to be. He’s got zero free time for hobbies or women. Or so he thinks until one walks into his life… and the path of an oncoming car.

Ryder doesn’t mind playing the hero for the skittish, scarred chef Penny. Maybe it’s the secrets in her eyes or the scar on her chin. Whatever the reason, he’s compelled to get closer.

Penny’s learned her lesson and now she’s paying the price. That’s why she’s sharing a dilapidated house in a tiny California town with her feisty grandmother and tween brother living off the leftovers from her catering job. It’s a far cry from her dream life. But who needs dreams… or love… or sex when there’s amateur plumbing projects to tackle and breakfast casseroles to bake?

One thing’s for sure, she’s never falling in love again. Not even with the sexy, snarky contractor who keeps testing the walls she’s built.

My Review

The prologue shows Ryder as the oldest sibling trying to protect his brothers and sisters from their father, which gives a good look at why he is the way he is later.

In the present, Penny lives with her funny grandmother, her teenage half brother, and a very entertaining parrot. She jokes that she’s cursed when it comes to relationships and is trying to rebuild after her last one. She works as a chef for a catering company and genuinely wants a fresh start while helping her grandmother at the same time.

Their lives overlap in more ways than expected in the small town of Star Falls in Sonoma County. Between beaches, ranches, and wineries, the setting feels cozy but still limited enough that everyone eventually runs into each other. The chemistry between Penny and Ryder is immediate, and despite their baggage they find comfort together.

The romance builds steadily and yes, Ryder definitely falls first. The relationship has ups and downs but feels grounded in healing and trust. The chaotic families and found family moments really add warmth to the story, balancing the heavier topics the author touches on.

The ending is sweet and satisfying, and I liked how both characters stayed relatable through their fears and growth. Overall this was a heartfelt romcom with humor, emotion, and strong character connections.
