Onya doesn’t believe in dragons…
Old lore says that powerful dragons once created Andlang, ruling over it for thousands and thousands of years until man’s greed and cruelty destroyed it all. The dragons are long dead and gone, and now, her world is suffering. Crops are failing, livestock is starving, and the population is dwindling, making fertile women a precious resource—more valuable than gold.
Onya doesn’t believe in fate either…
While her friends talk of marriage and having babies, she dreams of running away. Of a life without the burden of a husband or a child. Not even the Gods can save her when a royal carriage shows up at her homestead, taking her to the Great House of Kings, where she’ll be made a Lady and marry a nobleman—hoping she’ll birth a healthy child.
And it is her duty to comply…
Except, she’d rather be a servant for the rest of her life than an obedient wife and mother. Scheming of ways to escape, Onya creeps around the fortress, only to discover that the golden-eyed, dangerous, chained man in the dungeons has a different plan for her.
Because dragons, and fate, believe in Onya…
My Review
The story opens with the last dragon shifter, who also happens to be royalty, captured by the royal guard. From the start you know this world is going to revolve around power, enemies, and survival.
Onya is a strong young woman who believes in shaping her own future, even though she comes from a village that expects women to marry, settle down, and keep house. Instead she ends up taken to the capital where she faces a future she never wanted. Her journey and the bits of lore revealed through conversations kept me interested.
I liked that she has a warrior spirit and looks out for others, even when she’s the one in danger. The setting has a historical fantasy feel with castles, dungeons, and court politics. The branding becomes an important turning point and raises questions about fate and control for her character.
Saeldron, the last dragon shifter, and Onya don’t exactly get along at first. Their dynamic leans enemies to reluctant allies and slowly shifts as circumstances force them together. The story mixes adventure and romance, with tension building between them along the way.
The plot picks up more toward the end as conflicts start resolving and the bigger stakes come into focus. I appreciated the happy ending even though it took me a while to get through the book.
