There’s nothing more dangerous than a bored royal with Dark Magic and a new obsession.
The first mistake was expecting my obedience. Me, a Gifted, a prince to the people of Dark Magic. But while my royal parents can force me and my brothers to attend this university and “learn to coexist” with humans, we don’t have to like it.
And we don’t have to follow their rules.
Our appetites run darker—and hotter—than blood. Add in a little Fae Dust and the power of persuasion, and we find ways to entertainourselves. But the minute I stepped into tonight’s party, there was the whisper of a warning deep in my mind. One I could hear but couldn’t reach.
One human stands out among the worthless mortals. With eyes like ice and a body begging to be bitten, she’s a problem. And if the shadow circling my soul is telling me what I think it is…she belongs to it.
But there is no way the fates would give me, a Lord of Rathe, an heir to the throne of Dark Magic, a giftless girl.
I’ll prove they got it wrong. That she’s not mine. Even if I have to destroy her in the process..
My Review
I have to be honest, I picked this book up because of its cover and the sprayed edges. The design is gorgeous and called to my winter TBR. By the way, the author’s note on the paperback is scandalous but oh so good. I can’t help but think, what am I getting into?
London is a sassy female supporting her best friend Ben’s hockey team; she seems to be a new adult. Meanwhile, her worthless ex is jabbering and whining most of the game and just cannot catch a hint. She does make eyes at the opposites teams finest, and they gaggle outside the tunnel. I can’t tell if this story is about ice hockey ,college romance, or something else. I do love her, I don’t give attitude.
Knight and his brothers, Creed, Sinner, and Legend, are something else, but they refer to the human students as giftless. They are Rathe U students forced to attend. The use of magic and dark magic at that is a straight giveaway that this story is about more than mere college students. Knight and his brothers seem to be a type of royalty. I really like their crass attitude.
We move forward slowly with a lot of pining and unanswered questions, some hot moments of new adult fantasy, and some disturbing ones. But I’m no closer to figuring out what he and his brothers are . We do time jump backward as you get into the story. Okay, so maybe I have a clue as to the type of character that Knight is after that, but it still isn’t spelled out.
Knight and London haven’t had a lot of interaction at this point; it was mostly setting the stage, but then it gets steamy . We finally get a telling of what they did, you already know? This makes it so much more intriguing.
This book gets steamy as Knight and London stall dancing around each other, but they have so little character interaction, and everything in the book is still a mystery.
Knight is very reluctant about the mating bond he knows to be true, and meanwhile goes every which way about it to avoid it. London thinks she must be dreaming, and I don’t blame her. This college romantasy is a straight-up trip sometimes.
The magic between light and dark
In this story is uniquely named, with Argent being light and Stygian being dark. It gets it no closer to any answers, but I’m enjoying the angsty, morally grey main characters.
Maybe we do get some answers, it would make sense.
They have a whole enemies-to-lovers thing going with London hating him but still giving in, and him hating her but still wanting her. London tend toward the mystical while she is in Knights realm, which is interesting. Omg this gets wild and darker themed if that was possible, and that ending will leave you gasping.
I actually really enjoyed this book for picking it up for the cover. I would have liked it if the creatures like Knight and his brother were spelled out to the reader a little better, and that ending is a huge cliffhanger . I think the story would have been more enjoyable to me if there were a little more detail, like the type of creature , the significance of Rathe U, and more history with Ben. The story progressed rather slowly at first, but it will finish strongly. It is very new adult smutty for fantasy romance. But they don’t get a happy ever after.
I’m not reading further in the series mostly because I still had so many questions at the end of that I feel could have disclosed to the reader. I loved the book overall and enjoyed the read and the angst. But the immature hatered to lovers back to enemies wasn’t as enjoyable to me.
