One fae prince. One deadly bargain. And a mortal caught between desire and damnation.
Cate thought she knew darkness. As a trauma nurse, she had witnessed the worst of humanity. But nothing could have prepared her for the fae underworld. A realm where beauty is a weapon, desire is a trap, and mortals who stray too far don’t return. She almost didn’t.
Until Lachlan Gage—shadowed, ruthless, and feared—bound her to him with a deadly bargain. As the prince of New Orleans and ruler of the Nether Court, he is as much a curse as he is salvation. And with the Wild Hunt at his heels and war stirring, even his protection may not be enough. Because Cate is more than just his reluctant mortal. She is wanted.
But something ancient is rising, warping fae magic into something unnatural and cruel. It has nothing to do with Cate’s past—or so she tells herself.
There is only one thing more dangerous than the fae who would kill for her. The fae who would die for her. And Lachlan Gage has never been one to lose.
Contains mature themes.
My Review
Lachlan is in New York, waiting for death to finally catch up with him. Two days of waiting for Cate. Two days of waiting for the consequences of the choices he’s made.
We also get Cate’s POV, where she’s in London with Oberon, Titania, and the rest of the Hallow Court. This is where the secrets start to spill the truth behind the falling out, the betrayals, and the political tension that’s been simmering beneath everything finally comes to light.
“He was both the tempest and my shelter in the storm. The world splintered, emotions tearing through me as I went over the edge, Lach following with a strangled shout. He spilled inside me, his mouth finding mine as the world reknit, weaving bits of his soul into mine.” – Cate
And wow… the revelations in this book hit hard. Some of it is deeply political, some of it unexpectedly emotional, and all of it adds weight to Lach and Cate’s story. When they’re together? Absolutely sizzling. The chemistry is intense, earned, and impossible to ignore.
“You’re the only thing that chases the darkness away,”– Lachlan
This book had me smiling, flying through pages so fast I worried I might’ve missed something, and wishing I could step straight into New Orleans alongside them. I do get my wish but their return comes with suspense, danger, and a constant question of who can actually be trusted. The stakes are high, the decisions are heavy, and the “snake in the garden” vibe keeps the tension tight.
“You can question my authority. You can question my decisions. You can even question our future, but you cannot question that. I love you.” – Lachlan
What really stood out to me was the maturity of the characters. They own their choices, even when it takes them time to fully sit with the consequences. Cate and Lach are both carrying a lot, and that weight shows in every interaction. The story balances political maneuvering with the strain of a fated mate bond, clashing personalities, and plenty of steamy moments threaded between the tension.
There’s a lot happening here — shifting alliances, supernatural politics, and the integration of multiple supernatural races that adds real depth to the world building. Most of the story unfolds in New Orleans, which I loved, and the setting adds an extra layer of atmosphere to everything that unfolds.
The book definitely goes for shock and awe toward the end, with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. That said, the ending felt rushed to me, and while it didn’t leave me as breathless as the first book, it still kept me invested. I may not have loved it quite as much, but I would absolutely continue with this series.
