As teenagers, Callie Ironside and Lewis Adair were inseparable. So much so, Lewis still can’t work out where it all went horribly wrong, or why he’s spent the last seven years in London away from the love of his life.
Callie knows exactly where it all went wrong and while she tried to move on—learning pastry techniques in Paris and dating French men—returning home to Ardnoch to work in her mother’s bakery only reminds her of the future she lost with Lewis.
But when a visit to London brings them unexpectedly together, the passion, pain and animosity between them leads to a one-night stand. For Lewis, it’s the beginning of winning Callie and his life in Ardnoch back. For Callie, it’s a mistake that’s shaken up the devastating heartbreak she fought hard to forget. However, Lewis is determined to fight for her, and proves it when their night together results in more than just unresolved feelings.
As they come to grips with impending parenthood and the mistakes they’ve both made, Callie and Lewis will not only have to decide to fight for a love that has endured so many years apart, but a mysterious adversary who seems intent on destroying the future they’re building together.
My Review
This book is part of a series, and I am choosing to read it as a standalone.
This story starts out with Callie, a teenager who is head over heels in love with her best friend, Lewis. They live in Scotland.
They have their typical teenage moments of intimacy, being each other’s first.
Then we start with Lewis in the present day in London. He has just graduated after seven years of schooling to be an architect. But he is still pining for Callie, his best friend and first love. We do time jumps back and forth a lot in this story.
It seems Callie has returned to Scotland after learning to be a pastry chef in Paris. But her hometown is tainted with the love and friends who left her.
There is a lot of back and forth history and moments in the story as we get the pieces bit by bit of how they came to the present.
Both of them had trauma in their youth. This book gets steamy as they have a reunion of sorts. Their steamy encounter has him changing his plans, but wow, do they have some conversations to have.
Callie is stubborn, often making decisions to guard her heart, not caring about the pain later. Lewis is hopelessly in love with her and is now trying to win her back, but miscommunication and forced proximity in this small town are a thing. I kind of wish they would get back to the happy ever after.
The story has me teary-eyed as their truths finally surface, and seeing her admit just how broken she is. And then the accidental pregnancy trope comes into the story. I’m not a fan of this trope as I would rather the couple find their love and hea without the drama of a child in between it.
Later in the story, as things are looking grim, we get a bit of suspense as her life gets turned upside down yet again. This story does get steamy toward the end. This story ends sweetly after some action-packed moments.
The overall story was cute and an easy read. I did appreciate the second-chance romance and interesting characters in the coming-of-age romance. I love that they were new adult to midlife, and even with the cliche tropes, it was a sweet read. The little bit of suspense in the book kept it interesting, and the author did a great job in the overall vibe of the story.
