The Inn Between by Danika Brown

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Till death do us part” was never meant to be the end.

Nova Taylor has never felt more at home than when she’s surrounded by ghosts. So when her only living friend is nearing the end of her life, Nova refuses to mourn. Instead, she’s determined to give her the love story she deserves.

To do that, she turns to Maverick Oakhorn, a ghostbuster with a deep skepticism about meddling with the dead.

As they work to reunite the lost loves, she finally feels like she’s building the life and the family she’s always longed for.

Until a spirit that should have been left to rest threatens to tear it all apart.

Now, to protect the people she loves—living and dead—Nova must trust that the souls that are meant to stay will and that some bonds are too strong to break, even in death.

My Review

The blurb of this book isn’t very inspiring. We begin with Nova, who is a medium. Her best friend is James, a ghost, the former butler of Penrose Manor. She lives in an apartment behind the Manor.

She is somewhat of a recluse, even though she has a job. She doesn’t trust people easily with her secrets. She works as an assistant at the Nursing home. Working alone, people who have passed on and those stuck, she decided to make the manor an Inn of happiness for those in the afterlife stuck between life and now.

She meets a friend, a colleague to add to her solo life, and apparently, they are both mediums, but Mavericks lacks the charisma she does with the ghosts. The story becomes about reuniting her friend Marg with her lover Hank, but first, they must find him. It is intriguing but also very slow.

Maverick and her have a budding romance, slow build, of course, but mostly the story is focused on uniting families together, even in ghostly form. I like the way the author describes the person’s soul smell and the difference between good and evil. The cast of ghosts is a Golden Girls comedy with her friends and their interconnected lives at her Inn.

The story is a whirlwind but ultimately ends peacefully and happily.
