Onyx Storm (The Empyrean Book 3) by Rebecca Yarros

Rating: 5 out of 5.

After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.

But a storm is coming…and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

My Review

I love the breakdown of the characters and their signets at the beginning of the book. We begin this story about where Iron Flame left us with the crazy, unhinged cliffhanger.

Violet is chasing Xaden, not willing to sacrifice her love, her man, and her everything, even though he did the same for her. OMG, this starts out epic.

Xaden went from being a morally grey badass to dark and naughty. He is hot, and not just because of the darkness he wields. The story gets intimate, but it isn’t like it used to be. Gah, I want the old Xaden back.

This story is more political, with Violet balancing the needs of her dragons, the negotiations, and Xaden. OMG, the twists and turns in this book are mostly political, with a lot happening in Navarre. Violet is still a badass woman, and I love her strength.

Of course, one evil, egotistical man to another, she just can’t seem to not have them in her chain of command. I like the military stuff in the storyline, even if I don’t fully understand it. Mostly, I love Violet and Xaden.

I can’t believe how immersed in the storyline I already am, and omg, it just keeps getting better. Ah, so with the forced non-relationship, we finally get a love triangle in the story, with the Crown Prince still interested in Violet. P.S. I love that Xaden calls her violence. Of course, I didn’t get it till this story.

I love Andarna; that dragon is feisty and fun. OMG, they finally get a moment to break some furniture again, and it is so sweet. If dragons, adventures, and fights for their lives, and an unforgettable journey weren’t enough, now we have to throw in another plot twist.

This story has me on the edge of my seat as Xaden and Violet’s bond is tested in every single chapter of this book. This book ends on a gasping cliffhanger, and omg, I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This one is as re-readable as the rest and so action-packed that I’m afraid I missed something on the first read.

If you would like to read Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, you can find this book on Amazon. This Series is best read in order, starting with Fourth Wing, Iron Flame then this book, but it won’t be the end yet.

If you like this book, you may also enjoy books with these tags and categories: Morally Grey, Heroine, and Dragons.
