Awkward in October by Teresa Yea

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My name is Theodora Dy.

I’m single and live with my parents.

I may be existing, but I sure as hell am not thriving.

I want more out of life before resigning myself to decrepit spinsterhood.

I want adventures and mistakes, balmy summer nights and stirring rooftop conversations.

I want a beautiful romance.

Like something ripped straight out of the pages of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, my favorite book of all time.

But that’s all wishful thinking until I commit to a dramatic change.

So I quit my job.

Purchased a cheap old house sight unseen and booked a one-way ticket to Connecticut where autumn is in full swing and Halloween is just around the corner.

I may be living my best life, but I’m in over my head.

My fixer upper is falling apart and my big stupid gesture is sucking my bank account dry.

Fortunately, my grumpy neighbor, Carter, knows a thing or two about repairing ‘money pits’ (his words, not mine).

He’s perfectly practical in every way.

I’m a hopeless romantic.

We’re as opposite as two people can be.

But unbeknownst to him or me…

In October any wonderful unexpected thing might be possible.

Even the beginning of a beautiful romance.

My Review

This book is a quirky, cute, romantic comedy set in the autumn in Connecticut. It is all about the “Witchy House” and the whimsical historical fiction that goes with it. The owner, Theo, is very bookish, and the story’s theme is reading. Her romance is wild and funny, and the banter is fabulous in the storyline of the neighbors-to-lovers. The book ends sweetly.

Theodora is a grievance specialist for an insurance company. She is in midlife and discovers she may not be cut out for this job forever. I love that she is a bookworm and her group of book-loving friends. She is in a midlife crisis, quitting her job and buying a derelict house in Connecticut, and of course, it is historic. This house just might be haunted. I love the comedy in this book. It is a lighthearted read so far.

This story’s banter is fabulous and has some memorable moments. Her meeting with Carter is just one for the record books. Carter is a grumpy, wealthy contractor who believes in minimalism but is required to assist Theo in the restoration of the haunted house due to cheese debt.

This story has a lot of literary references. From Connecticut to Salem, they go, and I’m swoony with the autumn feels and bucket list items.  Somehow, over fusion pizza and crazy banter, things get heated.  This story is like a series of unfortunate disasters. Anything could happen.

This book is quirky and cute but ultimately ends sweetly. I loved the whimsical, historical, and book-loving nature of the MC.
