Rise of The Lycans: Mates & Bonds by Paulina Vasquez

Rating: 4 out of 5.

As the Ancient Prophecy foretold, the rise of lycans has started, but the Moon Goddess seems to have forsaken her wolves. Mates and bonds are a rarity. Without a mate bond, a shifter’s heart cannot recognize a mate. The Lycan King isn’t worried about his heart because he gave it away long ago. As the draw to her becomes impossible to avoid, Lukas takes what he’s always wanted.

When Selena finds herself mateless, she studies fashion in Paris as an escape. Reluctantly, she attends the mating ball at the Palace of Versailles, which leads to undiscovered secrets. The race against time is ticking across Paris as visions of a Goddess in distress start to make sense.

From the Empire of The Dead to the Iron Lady, no place is safe when shifters’ existence is at stake.

My Review

Lukas waits for his destined mate but sets his heart on a particular female. His family is that of the first Lycans and Elementals. This author does a great job refreshing your memory if you have yet to have other books in this series through the casual conversation. It is a long extended family tree. It is super sweet that Lukas has a crush on a particular lady, but he is one determined man to get his queen fated or chosen. But in this case, she is both and everything to him.

Selena is finishing her master’s degree in fashion in Paris. She misses home but runs away to escape Lucas’s lack of a mate bond, although she wishes it was him. Grandma Dori is a riot in Paris, and her unfiltered comments make the story much better.

Lukas and Selena’s first meeting in Paris is hot and rife with tension. Lukas is a complete cinnamon roll, and this book is very steamy and fraught with danger and family moments. There is a lot of action and adventure around Paris as they unravel the peculiarities in the story, but it all finally makes some sense. Lukas and Selena finally get their fated mate bond and all the feels. Grandma Dori is a hoot and totally makes the story worth reading.

This book was a good read. I loved the change in the fated mates and the overall adventurous storyline. I could have done it without some steamy scenes, but I liked the cinnamon roll alpha male. I loved Grandma Dori’s unfiltered comments and felt she made the story amazing. This was not the best book by this author ever; the storyline and plot didn’t give enough character connection to the main couple for the steamy level in the book. Their steamy intimacy fills the story more than natural romantic moments. Which would have allowed us to connect better with the characters than yet another steamy scene.

My favorite read of Paulina Vasquez’s books will always be The Broken Trilogy.
