The Backup Princess (Royally Kissed Book 1) by Katie O’Keeffe

Rating: 4 out of 5.

When a Texas gal punches a prince instead of curtsying, you know this isn’t your grandmother’s fairy tale.

Taking the bull by the horns is child’s play compared to ruling Malveaux. Yet here I am, a Texas girl turned princess, swapping tacos for a tiara.

Then I meet Europe’s most eligible bachelor, the irritatingly handsome Prince Alexander, and accidentally deck him instead of curtsying.

Oops.

I’d feel bad if he wasn’t such a self-satisfied jerk.

Now, I’m racing against a royal clock that ticks with the urgency of a preening peacock, trying not to let down my newfound country or my own wild heart. Alexander? He’s a walking contradiction, with a smirk that heats my blood and eyes that tell tales of a depth I didn’t expect.

Decisions aren’t exactly my rodeo, but this time, my choice could cost me my new crown—or lead to a love story that rewrites my happily ever after.

Will this Texas girl rise to the royal challenge, or is this one fairytale destined to end with the slipper never found?

My Review

This story is for you if you need a little escape and to slip into a Princess Diary‘s -like royalty romance. Maddie is an ordinary girl from Texas till she isn’t, and her new life is a learning curve. A swoony book boyfriend, a Prince, a Princess in training, and a romantic read to make you float in fantasyland. The enemies-to-lovers storyline, with a few jabs of comedy, is perfect and memorable. I loved the sweet-as-pie ending and the happy-for-now resolution to their issues.

Maddie is a Texas girl. She is a little introverted and awkward, but she definitely has some sass. Her heritage is intriguing. Her heritage and connection to the royalty in Malveaux are not a surprise; however, the unexpected revelation of her ability to be an heir is.

We do get Prince Alexander’s pov, as he is in the States and causing quite a stir in politics and gossip. Alexander is more than the title he bears. He is looking for love and romance, not someone just after his position. He is very smart but often lacks actual relationships.

Their first introduction didn’t start well, but it was definitely memorable. The forced proximity and the start of the enemies-to-lovers storyline add delicious tension to the plot. The romantic moments, filled with book boyfriend material, are sweet and heartwarming. Maddie’s journey as a Princess is a testament to her growth and resilience.

The anticipated guilt trip does come to pass, complicating their relationship. The question of choosing between love and heritage hangs in the air. The story concludes on a happy-for-now note, with the characters making difficult decisions and finding a satisfying resolution to their romance.
