Pushing Patrick: A Friends to Lovers Romance (The Gilroy Clan Book 1) by Megyn Ward

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A Friends to Lover romance like you’ve never read before…

Cari

Patrick is my friend.
My best friend.
He’s every good girl’s dream come true.
Funny, sweet and holy-hell hot.
Perfect.

So what’s the problem?
I’m far from perfect and I’m no one’s idea of a good girl.
I know that, but I’ve wanted Patrick ever since the first night we met. Ever since I kissed him and… well, did decidedly ungood-girl things to him in the front seat of his car. The same night he gently but firmly shut me down completely with a it was nice to meet you, Cari.

I know he’s out of my league, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting him.
And if the way he looks at me when he thinks no one is paying attention is any indicator, he wants me too.
But he’ll never make a move on me. Not unless I make him. That’s what my friend Tess says. She thinks all Patrick needs is a little push.

I think she might be right.
The last thing I expected was for him to push back.

Patrick

Cari is my friend.

My best friend.

She’s the perfect male fantasy come to life.

Talented, smart and so damn beautiful that when she’s around, I can’t seem to look at anyone else.

Perfect.

So, what’s the problem?

I’m a nice guy and we all know where nice guys finish.

Dead last.

I’ve wanted Cari ever since the first night we met. The night she kissed me. Touched me in ways that made it hard for me to think clearly. But she was drunk and just broken up with her douchebag boyfriend—as much as I wanted her, I couldn’t take advantage of her that way.

Because Nice Guy, remember.

Even though it’s been years since that night and know she’s moved on, I can’t stop thinking about her. About that night. How good she tasted. How good she felt.

But we’re friends now.

Best friends.

Roommates.

And it’s driving me absolutely insane.

My Review

Patrick is a fraternity member and a university student. He is straight-laced and nicknamed “Captain America “by his more rowdy brothers. Of course, he is blessed with an anaconda that puts some of his frat brothers to shame, but he is also shy and more rigid than them.

Cari, his roommate’s ex-girlfriend, knows a good guy and smartly asks him for a ride home when she sees one. Their meet-cute is interesting, but he is just too much of a good guy to take advantage of.

Then we time-skip three years, he has graduated by now. It seems Cari struggles with not picking the right guys; instead, she is best friends with an excellent Patrick but dates all the guys who cause her drama. Patrick is such a nice guy, but they have some unrequited attraction.

Wow, the first time, he doesn’t act appropriately. Of course, his roommate sees, just wow. Damn, this book gets sizzling like an out-of-control bbq. I thought Patrick had it all together, but it seems his feelings get involved. He needs help to think straight. I hope he doesn’t lose his girl over it.

The book ends with a dramatic cliffhanger, and the author was nice enough to include a snippet of the next book at the end. However, we don’t get any happiness for Cari and Patrick. This book has lots of internal conflict for the characters and is sizzling hot. Still, the romance ends for the characters before it even begins. The book has many great moments and hot scenes, but I wouldn’t call this book a romance.

Reading the next book helped me finish this one, and this story finally went somewhere. It just wasn’t swoony romance to me. Patrick was great at first, but then he changed, and his changes, while steamy, were more toward the alphahole, and I think the character changing halfway through the story was inconsistent.
