Stolen Spring: A Steamy Hades & Persephone Mafia Retelling (Roses and Retellings Book 1) by Elle Lacerta

Rating: 3 out of 5.

DAMON

The gods are tested.

Nobody wins.

We were reborn as mortals. I was the guard dog for the Greek Mafia. Getting information, protecting our territory, and crushing enemies bound in blood was all I’ve ever known, until…

Until Percy came along and stole my heart.

Nobody takes from me and gets away with it.

What else was I to do besides steal her?

Damon Steele is Hades’ unfortunate reincarnation, a loyal member of the Greek Mafia. When he’s given a unique target- the daughter of a bloodthirsty rival mafia leader of the Achillion Brotherhood- he does his best to get close to her, even if it means the hardened brute has to take up a minimum wage job at her flower shop in sunny Mediterranean Greece.

Then, a kill contract is placed on Percy while Zeus demands her death for retribution, Hades has no choice but to take her where nobody can hurt her.

Even if that means a frozen Alaskan hell on the other side of the world.

My Review

The book starts out scorching hot with a dream. Percy and her roommate Shay have great banter and history. But we only get a little of a feel for the characters and POV changes to Damon. Damon and Meg are peculiar, and I can’t place them before the story POV changes again. I really need more info on the characters.

Percy has damaged MC vibes. But as this story switches POVs, we only get tidbits of info. Dimitri, Damon, and Percy have a connection to the city’s mafia families and less-than-wholesome people. I really like Shay. Damon is looking for a new place and a new life. He wants to settle down and live away from his current job and status.

Oh, this book has some dark themes, as we see an unexpected side of some characters. Damon’s growing heart is unusual and intriguing.

This book is a tangled web of dark themes and characters with connections and past experiences. Percy is thrust into the middle of all this madness. This book ends with a taste of happiness or Stockholm’s syndrome, but then it leads to book two.

While the writing is almost poetic, I could not connect with the characters. I needed more of them initially to help me see through their POV. It was a good retelling, and I enjoyed the story of the unlikely hero and the innocent lady. But I wouldn’t be interested in reading any further. While I admire the author’s version and a full-length book, I need more character development to fall for a story. I want to know what makes them unique; more backstory would have helped immensely. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered in the story.
