After the Seelie king Torin nearly froze me to death, I plunged through a portal into my true home. Turns out, my hometown is a wild Unseelie kingdom known as the Court of Sorrows. When Torin follows me and sees my new horns, he quickly realizes that his intended bride is an enemy of his realm. In fact, his name for my kind is “demon.”
But even if I have the horns of an Unseelie, I’m not welcome here, either. Queen Mab and her monstrous soldiers are delighted to torment us, accusing me of being a traitor. If we want to get out of the Court of Sorrows with our lives, the only hope we have is to stay as close to each other as possible–even if it means fleeing on horseback and sharing a bed. Every moment is bittersweet since it could be our last–and Torin is condemned to kill anyone he loves.
My Review
This book has dark themes, with action and adventure, life and death moments, and an enemies-to-lovers romance. Ava and Torin captivate you with new information, new fantastical lands, and truths they discover. Ava is quite the heroine in this political storyline, with both Seelie and Unseelie as enemies to each other and her kind stuck in the middle, not fitting with one side or the other. I enjoyed the forced proximity, and only one bed was brought into the storyline. Ava’s supernatural, magical powers start to show, which are pretty amazing. Of course, this book ends happily.
This book begins with Ava, who has fallen thru a portal to a strange land. Her clothing and features have changed as well. Their welcoming in this new land could be more gentle and more subtle. King Torin enters with a bang.
This is the book’s steamy, and the author beings with the only one-bed trope for this fantasy, back to the quest and adventure for King Torin and Ava. In this wonderland of Unseelie, they find pain, beauty, and Ava’s true self. I love her determination and realistic thoughts. Torin Is a great protector, and I like him in this story now that he doesn’t fear his curse. The forced proximity is even better in the quaint forest.
The author indeed paints the Unseelie as unflattering, evil characters. Between the words and actions, I’m not rooting for them to win anything. There are many life-and-death moments in this story. They are thrilling and gruesome but lead us through the tale somewhere. I’m hoping for a miracle at this point.
I find it strange that we hit a big climax at about 40 percent in the book, then we switch Pov to Shalini. Ah, we get a glimpse of the Seelie kingdom despair thru her human eyes. This story is very political, putting one side against the other without even a tiny amount of understanding between Seelie and Unseelie. At first, I thought it was about uniting, but now I am still determining where it is going.
The human girl has become more and found her true heritage, but she is still a heroine. Ava was badass in the last book, but there is nothing like revenge to make her even better. Her coming into her magic is sweet to read, even destructive. Oh, dangerous secrets are revealed on both sides of Faerie. This book gets steamy and finally starts looking up for King Torrin and Ava.
Oh, the ending of this book is unbelievable. I love the combination of powers and hearts. Ava and Torin do not disappoint. This book ends happily. I didn’t expect that with the fantasy drama and life-and-death situations, but I love how the author wrapped it all up. This was a tremendous eulogy, and I’m so glad I found Frost to read and got sucked into this enemies-to-lovers fantasy story.
