Court of Winter: Fae Fantasy Romance (Fae of Snow & Ice Book 1) by Krista Street

Rating: 5 out of 5.

When Ilara’s abducted by the hated crown prince, she’s faced with an impossible choice—enslavement to her nemesis or war for the kingdom.

Being a defective marks me in the eyes of the Solis Fae.

Wingless. Magicless. Weak.

To my kind, I’m nothing—not when strength is needed to survive the perpetual snow and ice that shrouds our northern continent in endless winter.

But I’ve persevered, living a meaningful yet simple life with my sister . . . until the hated Crown Prince of the Winter Court thunders into our village.

Prince Norivun’s massive black wings and potent magic cloud my senses and steal my breath. He’s beautiful yet brutal, so when he whisks me away and locks me in his castle I’m certain my death is tomorrow’s promise.

Yet my end doesn’t come, not when the prince looks at me with hunger in his gaze while revealing the true reason for my abduction.

Now I’m faced with an impossible choice—either join forces with the hated prince who’s robbed me of everything I love or watch our kingdom start a devastating war.

My Review

The glossary of terms and definitions at the beginning of the book is fascinating. The map is beneficial as well.

Ilara is defective. She has a different hair color than most fae and is wingless. She and her sister Cailis are just trying to survive. Although she is different, her garden is magical. Ilara’s poverty and lifestyle come into the story, adding an opposites trope to this book.

One working morning goes differently than planned as she meets the Crown Prince of the Winter Court. Prince Norivun is an enigma. He is stern, but we don’t immediately get too much of an impression of him. I can’t tell if he is saving her or punishing her.

As their journey to the capital passes, we learn the Prince is more than expected. I enjoy seeing his protective side and more caring emotions. He is definitely swoon-worthy when he is a gentle fae. I love this fae fantasy romance. The forced proximity and all the magic and supernatural.

Ilara has secret gifts. It turns out she isn’t so defective after all. Which is truly unique!! Her magical powers are thrilling and help make her a more confident woman. I love that she is strong and sassy compared to Prince Nori’s morally grey and more stoic attitude.

Oh, the enemies to something ramp up, and now we get a bargain and an adventure. The author definitely brings in the heat and the angsty. I love Ilara and Prince Norivun. As if things aren’t complicated enough with a bargain and simmering angsty emotions. The author adds genuinely unexpected trials. I’m still figuring out how I feel about this, as if this opposite attraction, enemies to lovers and slow burn, wasn’t enough; there is more. This book reads very much like a new adult romance.

Omg, so much has changed for Ilara in this story. She isn’t defective at all. She is amazing. I love her reactions and, of course, her supernatural powers. I can’t wait for the next book, and I love a series that continues with the same characters.
