Question 1 : Where did you find the inspiration for your main character?

The idea of her paranormal (no spoilers) was simply that I wanted to read something different. I’ve been reading fantasy for over a decade, and it’s mostly dragons and wolves. Not that I’m not a fan!! But after reading Crave, I began to think about the possibility of different possible paranormal. Ones not often written about. As for her character. I knew I wanted someone strong. But not too girl bossy. Even though Blake is pretty badass, I like it when people who don’t necessarily think of themselves as strong rise to the challenges put in front of them. I guess, in a way, you could say I found inspiration in having my kids. Looking after them has forced me to rise to challenges I was not at all prepared for. But I got through it and came out the other side a better, stronger person.

Question 2: Can you share a snippet that isn’t in the blurb or excerpt?

Will have a think about and email you.

Question 3: What is the key theme and/or message in the book?

Overcoming your demons. Equality. Recognizing the strength and worth in those who are different is a big part of the story. Not judging people based on your expectations. It is important to me that my books have a deeper message beyond just the surface story.

Question 4: Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers about?

I always have a thousand ideas on the go at once. But I think my next series will be based on an idea I’ve had from a YouTube video I saw where men and women were both asked separately if they would sacrifice their lives for their partner. I was shocked that most women said no! While most men said yes. My next MC is a woman who trades places with her boyfriend and is taken to the underworld by Death.

Question 5: What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

I couldn’t choose. I’ve been reading since I was in my early teens and haven’t stopped since. But if I absolutely had to choose, it would have to be Jennifer Armentrout. The way she puts you inside her character’s head is amazing.

Question 6: Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I haven’t read ACOTAR. People are always surprised when I tell them that. I am a huge fantasy fan, as you can probably tell, but I can’t bring myself to start because I know I won’t be able to stop and I just don’t have the time to do it justice right now. Maybe when I’ve finished this series. Same goes for the Fourth wing and Iron Flame. Both are just sat on my bookshelf. Waiting.

Question 7: What is your kryptonite as a writer?

Re-reading chapters I’ve already written. I get too engrossed in my own story and stop writing new stuff. If that doesn’t sound too sad!?!?

Question 8: Do you write listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied this current book?

Yes! All the time. I have a long list of songs that inspired specific scenes in the series. The one that stood out for Ashes was Chainsmokers – Takeaway. I think I listened to it a million times on repeat. No joke.

Ashes Playlist

Question 9: When you’re writing an emotionally draining (or sexy, or sad, etc) scene, how do you get in the mood?

I draw on experiences from my own life. Everyone has trauma of some kind. I think back to that time and how I felt and go from there. Kind of like actors do.

Question 10: What advice do you have for writers/authors?

Read. Read widely and not just in your genre. Even books I read 15 + years ago still influence me today.

Question 11: If you could only have one season, what would it be?

Autumn. It’s not too hot or cold, and I love seeing the colours of leaves changing on the trees. And it’s perfectly accepted to snuggle up with a blanket, a cup of tea and a book.

Question 12: What is the best part of your day?

When I get all my kids to bed at night! It just feels like such an accomplishment after a long day. Also means I am free to read and write!

However, I got you a sneak peek of the next book cover below. Of course, I will be reviewing all the books because I’m obsessed at this point and counting down the days till Arise releases. In the meantime, make sure you read Ashes. If you would like to read my review, you can find it here.
