Ashes by Bethany Savant

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Blake Stone doesn’t believe in Happily Ever After.

Having been bumped around the foster care system for most of her life, she knows just how cruel and heartless the world can be. But with her new foster parents, Blake believes she has finally found her home.

That is, until Supernatural Services discover she’s a Shifter and whisk her away to Dorn, the Supernatural Academy hidden in the depths of the Scottish Highlands.

Forced to part from the only two people she has ever trusted, Blake puts her head down, determined to get back to the life of safety and security she has carved out for herself. But when her animal never emerges, and she unwittingly gains the attention of the enigmatic Shifter Alpha, Grayson Hunt, she’ll not only have to confront their growing attraction but also dark secrets from her past.

Can she overcome her demons? And accept that the quiet life she longed for may not be her true destiny?

My Review

This book is a masterpiece, bringing the right tropes and storyline to enthrall you into this paranormal world. Bethany Savant has created a fantastic story of a damaged Mc, a chosen mate story, and a hot protective alpha. There is a little suspense in this contemporary paranormal romance to be curious about. I’m so captivated I couldn’t put the book down. I didn’t expect Blake to turn into that paranormal, and I won’t reveal it. I’m sorry, but there are no spoilers here. But now the prologue makes more sense—I got a total book hangover after reading this. I can’t wait for the next book. It is a must-read. This story is everything: enemies to lovers, paranormal, intriguing storyline, and a damaged MC. I love the addition of the chosen mate trope and, of course, the new girl at the academy. Blake becomes so much more than she began at the beginning of this story, evolving into a true heroine.

The prologue of this book reveals nothing about the story other than captivating your attention.

We do not have her name immediately, but she is at Dorn Supernatural Academy. I do find it peculiar that others can’t see it. Her name is Blake. The tidbits of info we get are cryptic at best; I’m still determining what her paranormal is.

After being dropped in it unexpectedly, Blake is still adjusting to the supernatural world. She is supernatural but still basically human. Her interactions with the students are awkward and disparaging. She is damaged by her human life and events we don’t know anything about yet. I love that she works thur them as she learns about her new world.

So, I love all the exciting dynamics in this story; the human girl is in a new paranormal academy setting and, of course, hot shifters. This book has a bit of a mix between “Twilight” and The “Crave “series. This book is mesmerizing with her struggles and his fierce protective instincts. The found family for her, and, of course, she learned about the paranormal world. It is captivating to see stuff from her pov.

I’m unsure what to make of Grayson’s charming, protective, and sometimes flirty nature. I wonder if he knows something we don’t yet, but I’m waiting for the bomb to drop. I didn’t expect Blake to turn into this, and I am entirely enthralled now. I can’t put this book down.

Are they a couple? I can’t tell, and no affirmation is given. I wouldn’t say I like this sudden triangle of others interested in Blake. It’s strange to have the other high-ranking races wanting her attention. There are a lot of moments in this where Blake is an idiot, and I want to get some sense into her. What I thought might be fated mates has now turned into a teen drama romance. Could you clarify for me what the heck is happening?

Finally, she gets her head straight, and this book gets New Adult steamy again. Oh, this story finally starts to work how I want it to, and then the author ends on a cliffhanger. I knew I would have a book hangover from this one. It was just that magnificent. Ahh, I can’t wait for the next one in the series. I’m hooked on Blake and Grayson.
