Sign of the Slayer by Sharina Harris

Rating: 3 out of 5.

High school is supposed to be about studying, socializing, and marching-band practice. Not fighting vampires. Then one night flipped my world inside out—now, my life sucks. But it isn’t all bad. I’m at a slayer academy, learning things like the real origin of vamps and how to make serious weapons out of thin air.

Every last one of them will pay for what they did. I’m doing great.

Until I come face-to-face with the actual vampire prince…and I’m not sure of anything anymore. Vampires are supposed to be soul-sucking demons. But Khamari is…something else. He’s intelligent and reasonable—and he seems to know things about me that could change everything.

He’s also hiding something big, even from his own kind. And when a threat from an ancient evil is so extreme that a vampire will team up with a slayer to take it down, it isn’t just my need for revenge that’s at stake anymore.

It’s the whole damn world.

My Review

This story is an exciting concept combining multiple tropes, but it could be in a more cohesive format. I thoroughly enjoyed the human-turned-supernatural part and even the enemies-to-lovers aspect of the story. The mythology was fascinating, even with the twists. However, it loses focus on the main characters and embraces a broader storyline that sometimes gets complicated and confusing. The book ends on a cliffhanger with not all issues resolved. The book overall was action-packed but wasn’t an outstanding read and definitely more fantasy fiction than paranormal.

Raven is a high school band participant. She is intelligent, talented, and looking forward to her future. She does have some oddities happening, and I love the unexplained reactions. Her code name is often used instead of her real name, so understand when they call her Texas. It is fitting as it is where this journey started.

Wow, chapter two gets supernatural, and all next-generation heroine on us as Raven transforms from more than just human. It’s dark and grotesque but has yet to give us many answers. However, this spin on paranormal fiction is fascinating. The author clearly took some liberties with a more “X-men” style approach to her supernatural talents.

We finally get Khamari’s POV and figure out who exactly this is. Oh, twisted. He is a Vampire Prince of sorts to one of the stronger clans. I can’t get too good of a read on him as his side of the story is a little more confusing.

The mythology the author has used is intriguing. I love the way it is twisted to suit the story. Slayer vs Prince of the Underworld, will sparks be flying between Texas and Khamari? This story is more fantasy fiction than paranormal, and it seems someone is constantly chasing their tales.

The end of this book goes from main characters to multi-organizational problems and way less about the main characters. The book is twisted, but the story itself is a mess and ends on a cliffhanger. Connections to the past come too late to make sense of; the known happens, but again, there is still time to enjoy the book. Overall, it was a jumbled mess at the end. I liked the beginning of this book much better.
